XPS 13 9370 not waking from sleep normally

My laptop will be put to sleep and nothing will wake it up from sleep-mode except pressing the power button. If I'm connected to my dock with the laptop lid closed, this is not ideal since that means I'd have to open my laptop, press the power button, then close the lid again. Any thoughts on how this can be fixed?

Hi b.oh,

Thanks for posting.  Apologies that your system is not performing as expected.

Today's computers with Windows 10 no longer utilize sleep mode, they use what is called Modern Standby and it works differently than what we remember sleep mode to do.  Here is information regarding Modern Standby, hopefully it will be helpful for you.

If you still require assistance and the system is under warranty, you may contact me privately. Be sure to include your personal information (name, address, telephone, email) and your computer's service tag number in your message. Thanks.

If there is no warranty, then you could contact our Out of Warranty team to get a quote for a paid service request.

The Modern Standby situation can confuse things quite a bit.  Could you go through your settings for such things as:

Display Off

Sleep
What happens when you close the lid

Hibernation

The display off timer effects when the system goes into low power mode.  I suppose you have your system set to turn off the laptop display with external display connected?

The sleep timer doesn't put the system to sleep but does have an effect.  Such as, if playing music with iTunes, the music will continue to play in low power mode until, the sleep timer is reached.  At that point, it ceases to play but something like Groove music may continue.

You may have to play with the different settings to get what you want, such as not allowing the display to turn off when plugged in and use the dual monitor settings to turn it off.

You also have to be careful since there are reports of systems coming out of low power modes at inopportune times.  Such as when traveling and usually being caused by a Bluetooth device, which is something you might use other than the power button or the space bar if it were to be going into low power mode.

@robert p - The issue seems to be something else. The windows articles indicates that there should be multiple wake sources to modern standby including power source changes and using external keyboards/mice. These methods currently do not work and the only method to wake from modern standby is the power button (not even the built in keys work). These all used to work for the past 6 months I've been using the device and I'm assuming I've been utilizing modern standby all that time without realizing it since I've always been on windows10.

@Saltgrass - This doesn't seem to be sleep timer related since other sleep events (including manual ones) cause it to not wake from anything other than the power button. I've gone into the BIOS settings so that the device would wake up when connecting a power source and when docking-in, but these settings don't seem to change anything.

When you hit the power button, the screen should turn on.  If you are getting any spinning dots then it is in hibernation which does take the power button..

Otherwise, I don't have much experience with Dock usage.

I'm bumping this up with added details in hopes that someone can help...

This is not just a docking issue. My laptop does not wake from sleep when opening the lid or pressing any keys. The ONLY way to wake from sleep is by pressing the power button.

I wish I could help, but I have asked for information and you seem reluctant to supply it.  It is hard to help someone without knowing factors with may be involved with the situation.

All I can tell you is to check the timers settings for hibernation and when the screen turns off.  Try hitting the space bar a minute or so after the screen goes off and see if it comes back.

You could also try doing a Sleep Study report on the system.  Open an administrative command prompt and type the command below.  Check were it keeps the report and copy it to your desktop.  You can analyze it or make it available from Onedrive or take screenshots of some parts and make those available.  It will contain info about your system so check that for anything sensitive.

powercfg /sleepstudy

@mikko_b I would need to see how your power settings for turn display off and hibernation timers are set.

If you pushing the power button and the lights come on then the system should be in Hibernation.  If it were in modern standby, it would just turn the screen back on when you tap the spacebar..

If you have done something to modify the Modern Standby operation, then not really sure where you system is but they do not technically sleep, as you know it..

I have this same problem in my XPS 13 9370.

If I put my laptop to sleep, it is not possible to wake it up. If you try to wake it up, keyboard lights go on for a while but screen stays black. Only way to go around this is to do full power-off by pressing power button for long time as original reporter told and that way reboot the laptop.

So also I do need a solution from Dell which solves this bug and enabling to use normal sleep without connected stand-by mode.

In my case connected standby mode has been disabled, because that was causing very big problems, e.g. laptop waking up in the middle of night or while in bag and then running super hot. What data you would need?

A system waking when in some type of storage is not a good thing.  I don't travel with my system but I always thought that might be because a Bluetooth device was involved or maybe the network or even some button being pushed accidentally ..  Shutting it all the way down should not allow for a system to power up on it own, assuming shutting it down actually shuts it all the way down..

If you have modified your system, there is no info I need, it would be irrelevant.  I set my system to stay in modern standby for about two hours, then go into hibernation.  But these settings, of course, would depend on how you use your system.
