XPS 15 - how long should it last?

I have had an XPS 15 for just over a year.  It has had the screen replaced a couple of times under warranty, but now the system has failed altogether and I am told it needs a replacement motherboard at a cost of just over $800.

Is that really the best I can expect for a $2,200 laptop?  Any thoughts on a good replacement - non Dell?  I don't mind paying for quality, but this machine was obviously not a quality product.
