XPS 16 – Recurring Camera Failure / Visual Sensing Controller Code 10

I would like to report what appears to be a recurring camera issue with my Dell XPS 16.

When I originally purchased my XPS, the integrated camera did not work. After troubleshooting the issue, Dell ultimately replaced the entire laptop. The camera on the replacement unit worked correctly at that time.

I had not used the integrated camera for quite some time because I normally use another laptop for Microsoft Teams. Recently, when I attempted to use Teams on my XPS 16, I discovered that the integrated camera was once again completely non-functional.

Current symptoms

  • Intel AVStream Camera is detected and Device Manager reports that it is working properly.

  • Windows Camera displays error 0xA00F4244.

  • Microsoft Teams cannot access the camera.

  • Visual Sensing Controller displays a yellow warning symbol and Code 10.

  • Device status also reports: “Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API.”

Troubleshooting already completed

I have performed extensive troubleshooting, including:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled the Visual Sensing Controller.

  • Installed the latest Dell Intel 2D Imaging / MCU / Visual Sensing Controller driver.

  • Ran SFC and DISM Windows system repairs.

  • Removed a recent Windows update to rule out a compatibility issue.

  • Performed a complete Windows 11 25H2 repair installation while retaining files and applications.

  • Used Dell's support website to identify updates specifically for this XPS.

  • Installed all six critical updates identified by Dell, including the latest BIOS and Intel/graphics drivers.

  • Reset the BIOS to default settings.

  • Ran the complete Dell F12 hardware diagnostics — all tests passed successfully.

None of these procedures changed the problem. The Visual Sensing Controller continues to report Code 10 and the integrated camera remains unusable.

Why I am raising this with Dell

I understand that my current XPS is now outside its warranty period. I am not posting this simply to request standard out-of-warranty troubleshooting.

My concern is that this is now the second XPS I have owned with a camera failure. My original laptop had a camera problem from the beginning and Dell replaced the computer. The replacement unit is now experiencing another failure involving the camera subsystem.

Given the premium positioning and price of the XPS product line, I would expect considerably better reliability from a basic component such as the integrated camera.

I would therefore appreciate a response from Dell regarding the following:

Is Dell aware of a recurring issue involving the Intel AVStream Camera / Visual Sensing Controller architecture on the XPS 16, particularly where the Visual Sensing Controller reports Code 10 while Dell hardware diagnostics report no failures?

If Dell has identified a firmware, driver, hardware, or design-related solution beyond the troubleshooting described above, I would be interested in knowing what it is.

I am also interested in hearing from other XPS owners who have experienced the same Visual Sensing Controller Code 10 / 0xA00F4244 camera failure.

    Not too sure of the exact XPS model, but I'm 99% certain your specific configuration is using a MIPI camera. These camera's have been notorious for having some sort of driver issue. Especially evident from the 0xA00F4244 error that is being received. I would recommend taking a look at this article here as it details why the camera may fail. The article says it pertains to corporate images, but really I'd say it applies to any time this driver fails. I'd recommend following the steps here to try and resolve the issue. In particular, you'd want to try to reinstall the drivers in the correct sequence listed:

    1. Search for Intel Chipset Device Software, download and install it (a restart may be needed.)
    2. Search for Intel Graphics or Arc Graphics Driver, download and install it (a restart may be needed.)
    3. Search for Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver (Related to the Intel Visual Sensing Controller (Intel Clover Falls (CVF)) or User Presence Detection (UPD).), download and install it (a restart may be needed.)
    4. Search for Intel Serial I/O Driver, download and install it (a restart may be needed.)
    5. Search for Intel Management Engine Components Installer, download and install it (a restart may be needed.)
    6. Search for Update to the latest version of the BIOS that is available, download and install it (a restart may be needed.)
    NOTE: Drivers must be installed in the correct dependency order. Failure to do so is a documented cause of MIPI camera non-detection post-imaging.
    The preboot diagnostics will not test the MIPI camera module. This is a higher bandwidth camera so it requires much more processing than what the F12 test is capable of. Should the manual driver reinstall not work, then you can instead use the SupportAssist app to test the camera hardware. Once installed, to test the PC hardware, go to the Support page, and click Get started in the Test my hardware card. Then "I want to troubleshoot my PC" section is displayed and select the camera. Should the test pass, then the hardware should be functional. If it fails, then the camera may need to be replaced. If already out of warranty, then it would require for a quote to be purchased.

    @Plabelle789​ Were you also able to do the supportassist app camera test? If it passed, then the next best thing would be a full Windows reinstall as the hardware is detected. If it failed or if unresolved after reimaging, then replacing the camera would be the next best step. However, that would require replacing the entire LCD assembly for this model.
