Alienware ticking sound when charging

Hello, my Alienware laptop makes this sound as seen in the video 90% of the time when charging. The sound happens even when the laptop is switched off but the power cord is still plugged in. If I take the cord out, the sound rarely happens but still sometimes occurs. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Dean

The sound occurs approximately once every 30 seconds for one second in duration when the laptop is not plugged in to its charger.

Have you tried a new powersupply for the laptop and see if that changes anything? I have the same laptop but no issues.

Quick Tip: If your laptop has voltage / charging issues, try shutting it down, unplugging power from laptop, hold power button down for 30 seconds to do a full reset!

Thank you. If the original Alienware m15, it is designated Alienware m15 R1 on the internet.

I haven't tried this, I am hopeful of not having to buy another power supply if some other solution exists.

Hi @blattsmullet  the Alienware m15 R1 (2018) is designed to run hot. OP says that ticking sound also happens when not charging, perhaps this is a CPU crackling noise. If temperatures exceed 100ºC, a CPU,GPU to cooling system repaste is required. Please try and find location of ticking sound. Thank you.

It sounds like a possible motherboard failure, we recommend sending it in for repairs. You could try doing a power drain to see if you can get it to post, follow the steps below to do a power drain.

    • Turn the system off and disconnect the AC adapter.
    • Disconnect the battery.
    • Disconnect all external devices (USB devices, headsets, external monitors, etc.)
    • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
    • Connect everything again and turn on the system.

Hi @blattsmullet  the system is not giving diagnostic lights or beeps, but it might be creating Events. Please open the Windows 10 Reliability Monitor and allow it to load timeline of Events.

If system getting too hot, stop using it, leave it running to allow the fans to reduce its CPU temperature.

The laptop should be used on a flat surface (table or tray) and increasing the air gap beneath the bottom rear is beneficial. As the laptop gets older, dust and debris will have entered the air vents. Remove rear cover, ensure that fan blades are clean and remove dust and debris from exhaust vents, motherboard, etc.
