Client restore utilizing replicated data between datacenters.

Avamar DR test restore between Datacenters utilizing replicated backup data.

Avamar Server Software version is 7.1.1-145_HF231762_3 on the source environment and the destination environment, Avamar Client Software is also the same as the Server software.

When I perform a client restore for Disaster Recovery purposes utilizing one clients backup in one datacenter, once the restore is performed, to the standby host in the secondary datacenter, Avamar seems to be skipping files when the restore is performed, thus DR test fails, or all the data may not be replicated, (see below)

Client in Production datacenter will be PR

Client in Disaster Recovery datacenter will be DR

Here is the process I used:

Verified that the backup from the PR host was complete and accurate, (34.7 GB)

Logged into the DR Avamar Administrator.

     Choose "Backup and Restore"

Then proceeded to click on the "Restore" tab.

In the left pane, I clicked the + sign next to the REPLICATE Domain.

(and the PR domain looks correct, as it shows the PR domain to where I will choose the replicated backup,

I next clicked on the PR domain so all the clients show up below with the R next to the client name I need to pull the

          restore from .

Next i clicked the client that i need the replicated backup from.

I then selected the date the customer required, and then selected the directory structure as well to be restored to the DR host.

I then went to "Restore Now" and choose the following options:

"Restore Destination Client"  i browsed to the client in the DR site where the restore was to be placed.

"Restore everything to its original location" was selected.

in the "Overwrite existing files" box, i choose ALWAYS

(note: this option was selected because when the DR server was re-jumped, a basic amount of older files were

installed on the server as part of the jumpstart)

Recap:  I have double checked the all the folders that were selected for the restore and they indeed were checked, but when the restore completed, the files were not copied to the DR server, both the PR and DR severs are all the same hardware and are exactly the same.

The total backup size which was replicated to the DR Avamar site is 34.4 GB, and the amount of data not restored was around 300 MB

In the "Activity" log the Status of the Replication job for the PR client shows 34.4 GB and the actual backup size was 34.7 GB.

When I look in the DR Administrator under what was actually replicated, It matches what was sent to the DR site from the PR Avamar Server, only 34.4 GB.

I also performed an "on demand" replication of the client group in question, with the same result of 34.4 GB replicated. (why is Avamar not picking up the entire backup size of 34.7 GB to replicate to the DR site)

I've also looked around in the "Replication Settings" and I really don't see much in their to change, just general types of settings.

I am trying to figure out why if the scheduled backup was 34.7 GB why Avamar only replicated 34.4 GB and in the status column it shows

"Completed" and therefore the DR test fails.

Thanks,

Joe - TWC

in the restore log, does it show what files where NOT restored.

really wondering which ones.  That point might give a clue.

It looks like there is a flag that needed to be thrown in.

    Under the "Show Advanced Options"

the box needs to be checked " Recreate original path beneath target directory"

I think this option did the trick, waiting on our owner of the application to verify.

there was nothing in the log showing any inconsistencies.
