Q: backup library is already setup but i would like to automate the process of creating backup archives using server_archive. For example backup twice a week.

A: Sure you can use built-in cron scheduler provided on Celerra control station. Login as nasadmin and run crontab -e. The scheduler will open in vi and you need to add somthing similar to this:

    0 20 * * 6 /home/nasadmin/backupscript.sh >> /home/nasadmin/backupscript.log 2>&1

in this example i run backup script on Saturdays at 8 pm and output stdin and stdout to backupscript.log file, backupscript.sh will contain your server_archive commands

take a look at this page for more examples: http://www.adminschoice.com/docs/crontab.htm

Да Павел ..ето легко сделать используя crontab котопыи идет с control station. Посмотри на ссылку наверху...там есть примеры как едо делать. Пиши если есть еше вопросы.

is it connected to Celerra ? If it is ..have you run "server_devconfig server_2 -create -scsi -all"

substitude server_2 for correct datamover. I remember you were asking about using server_archive command ..is that what you are planning on using ?

I'll prefer to run a Probe before creating the devices for Tape drive - also, for Tape I'll prefer to put only "nondisks" in place of "all" -

    server_devconfig server_x -probe -scsi -nondisks
    server_devconfig server_x -create-scsi -nondisks
    server_devconfig server_x -list-scsi -nondisks

Once the Tape drives are visible to NAS, one can configure the NDMP backup software accordingly to get it backed up or use server_archive command on NAS to do so, if no NDMP solution is available.

I understand, you are suggesting accordingly in russian. :)

    Thanks,
    Sandip

just understand that this is by no means the functionality that a full backup software will provide

For example you will all have to do manually:
    - robotics control - i.e. moving and (un)loading of tapes
    - inventory
    - error management and alerting
    - tape rotation
    - tape labelling
    - protection - i.e. the backup software knows not to overwrite tapes before they are expired

Also be carefull if you backup is larger than a single tape (spanning) - I dont think a simple server_archive in a crontab job can handle this.

While obviously EMC (Legato) Networker is closest to us, we do support a wide range of NDMP backup software. If you are on a budget Backup Express or SyncSort or Bakbone are probably the smallest ones.

Just be carefull to know what you need - some of the smaller backup software packages dont support all the NDMP options like VBB, DDS or integrated checkpoints
