I was successful one time with being able to ping the IP address and actualy bring it up in a browser. But since then I cannot ping or telnet the ip. I have even tried a new PC and new installation. I have followed the steps in the setup guide and what was posted in the groups but still no luck. I am setting up VMplayer to use my single interface as a bridged connection and I am setting up eth0 and eth2 as static address giving them 10.10.X.X for an IP and using the same config for gateway, subnet and dns that is on my PC. Any suggestions on this?
Without digging into the posts here, I'll assume you:
1. are interested in setting up the "Control Station" IP since you want to use Celerra Manager with it. 2. used netconfig to configure your Simulator interfaces (with no arguments, it configures eth0, to configure eth1 use "netconfig -d eth1".) 3. you either used ifup to bring your interface up ("ifup eth0") or you rebooted the Simulator before trying to ping it. 4. that ifconfig shows you the configuration of the interface you expect.("ifconfig eth0" will show you just eth0, without arguments, you will get them all). 5. you are trying to access the Simulator from the host PC.
The eth2 interface is designed to be DHCP (there is a little DHCP server that comes with Player and Workstation). I have seen it set up as static, but I have very little experience with that setup.
On the host PC, if you go into Control Panel > Network Connections, you should at least see these Vmware connections: "Vmware network adaptor Vmnet1" and "Vmware network adaptor Vmnet8". If you don't, you may have to reinstall Player.
It should be pretty straight forward. Let me know if that helps.
Thanks for the response. Those are the steps that I have tired a number of times but still have not had any luck. When I boot up I notice that eth0 always fails even on a new installation. Is this normal?
There shouldn't be any issues for that setup. Normally performance is not great, but lack of memory (the more the merrier but for 1DM, you should have 2GB, for 2DM you should have at least 3GB) on the host PC or other activity on the host PC has the greatest impact on performance.
I should have asked before: which version are you using?
I tried a new install on my local PC and am able to get it working but it is painfully slow. Are there any issues with running Workstation 6.5 on Windows 2003 64bit with the simulator? That is were I am trying to get it to work.
I still cannot ping the static address I set for eth0 and eth1. I can ping the DHCP address assisgned to eth2. I have went throug the steps a number of times but still no luck. I wonder if its more of an issue with the VM software and my hardware? I have tried both vmplayer and vmworkstion on my sever and have not had any luck setting a static IP that I can ping.
Are you able to ping the Simulator now? If not, did you do everything in my first post? What symptoms are you having? Use ssh instead of telnet. I don't know if we still do it, but we used to disable telnet.
Using Celerra Manager requires you to wait for several minutes after booting the Simulator so that all the software gets up.
