I looked at the list there and there are no listings for an E1505... also, when you do intstall linux on the computer will the partition that is designated for the system image be entirely deleted? either way, is it possible to designate the system image partition to an external hard drive?

The partition dedicated to Dell PC Restore may or may not be deleted when you re-partition to install Linux, but the Dell PC Restore feature will be disabled in either case because of changes to the MBR. The feature may be repaired if it's partition is not deleted, but the repair will return the MBR to it's original state, thus removing the Linux partition.

Dan Goodell has an article on how to save the Dell PC Restore as-shipped image (with the image restore utility) to DVD, after which the partition dedicated for that purpose may be deleted and the free space used for other purposes.
http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/index.htm (Follow the link titled "Restoring the Ghost Image")

Another option is to obtain imaging software for saving/restoring system partitios. Replace the Dell PC Restore feature with imaging software to gain compatibility with partitioning alterations. You could save an image of your C: partition in it's current state to CD/DVD or another drive, then perform the Dell PC Restore operation, then image the C: partition in it's as-shipped state. Once both images are safely saved elsewhere, the hard drive may be partitioned as you wish, after which the image of your C: partition in it's current state may be restored.

Another forum contributor, sommes, has provided instructions and tools to preserve an image of the entire drive on CD/DVD, and with a little modification these may also be used to save individual partitions.

    Fr33zeFram3,
E1505 and Inspiron 6400 are mentioned together by Dell and i believe the hardware components are the same except for the processor(dual core in E1505).Mandriva 2006 should work on both the systems.Download the live cd version of Mandriva 2006 and boot the linux off the cd (without hard disk install) and see if your hardware (sound, graphics etc) is getting recognized and play around in the linux.then you can decide to install to hard disk.

    Hi..
I have used Ubuntu Breezy and it is working fine. I have to upgrade the kernel as mentioned at
    http://individual.utoronto.ca/jaelle_kitty/inspiron6400/

After this my dual core was recognized.

I have dell WiFi card and I had use ndiswrapper to make it work.

    I havn't tried Mandriva 2006.

    Hi ..
You can use the live CD tu see how if the system is compatible for your system..
For this u need to set default boot option with CD, then have the LIVE CD inside the CDROM and start ur system. Allow the system to boot from CD and follow the instruction on the screen.
