I'm currently using Suse on a dual boot PC but want to scrub Suse and switch to a standard Ubunta installation without risking my Windows installation. How should I best go about this?
Are there any secrets, tips, hints, or is it all just common sense?
I've already got it partitioned. My concern is that I my Ubunta installation to kill my Suse installation and to install it in it' place adjusting the boot loader that I already use or replacing it with its own version so that I can still duel boot as before but to a different OS build. Will it do this automatically?
The best advice I can give you is to manually partition your hard drive during the installation process. Ubuntu will automatically install a bootloader and you should not lose your Windows installation.
The Ubuntu installation process will install its own bootloader (and overwrite the one from openSuSE). Of the many times I have installed Ubuntu, I have never had it miss my Windows installation.
Do this. Format the partition that suse is on and then boot the computer with the windows xp cd. go into the repair option and type fixmbr. ( I think that is gthe command ) That will rewrite the master boot record. Then reboot. It will be as if suse was never installed.
