Adding RAM

Hello, I'm researching adding RAM to my computer. I need to know the choices in capacity and configuration, if I can add just one module or pairs, and if I can keep the old ones or if they must be removed. I'm doing an assignment and we have to either call a computer store or use the web to find our information. Thank you in advance! :)

No idea how to go about this or what you need to help so here is just some of the stuff I have.

Alienware M14x R2

Intel core i7-3610QM

6 GB RAM (not sure yet how many slots - can't find out what it came with)

OS 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Available memory 63.15%

DIMM0 2,048.0 MB

DIMM1 4,096.0 MB

There are two memory sockets, so at least one module has to be replaced up upgrade.  It's generally better to install a matched pair of modules, but the system will run on modules of two different capacities.

I know this question is old, but in case anyone els needs info. Crucial memory has a tool to detect your memory components & recommended upgrades.    www.crucial.com/usa/en/systemscanner
