Can you tell us what specific processor it is that you are wanting to use. 

Also, I'm really sorry but most of the major manufacturers such as Dell, HP and Gateway consider the micorcode proprietary and will not release that.

Just to add, I had to get a new processor because the 1.8 that came with the system died just after the 3 yeasr warranty ran out!!!! typical.. I know i can always use my HP or my M70 but i dont really like having the 8200 doing nothing in my home studio... And here in Sweden the older 533 P4s are very hard to come by now..nobody stocks them anymore, its all 800 + ... and the ones they do have cost thre times as much as the celeron did!!!!

Your board will only support 400mhz FSB processors. If it came with a 1.8 processor it is a 850 chipset with 400mhz support. The later 850E boards had support for 400 and 533mhz processors

M70,  I don't know if you are aware of it, but originally Dell offered another version of BIOS A09 for download.  That version reportedly supported hyperthreading and was replaced after a couple of days with a BIOS version that didn't.  It's quite possible that this short lived BIOS version also had undocumented support for the processor upgrade that you are trying to do.  Although the original version of A09 can't be found on Dell's web site, it is still available at Sponge Bob's web site which he has devoted to the 8200 model.  You can click here for a web page that contains a link to that BIOS version.  I can't say for sure if this BIOS version will help, but I thought I would mention it.

Unless you replaced that motherboard it is a 850 and not a 850E. Any 8200's ordered prior to May 2002 came with a 850 chipset and as far as I know anything with less than a 2.0ghz processor falls into that catagory. Do a forum search on the 8200 and you'll find that subject has been talked about many times.

ok guys!! i really dont want to be rude or anything but!! i know what chipset is on the motherboard its a 850e and it is one of if not the very first one for the 8200 so denyboy, please no more talk on this subject, My contacts at Dell in both Sweden and Ireland are better than most but to get a microcode update so that the NEW D series Celerons start would be superb for all the 8200 owners out there wanting to upgrade the CPU and not wanting to lash out lots of dosh for a northwood.. Thats all.. i just wanted Dell´s attention not a debate... sorry..

Well I don't want to be rude either, but when the early Dell 8200's shipped in 2001 there was no such chipset as a I850E. Yes there was an I850, but not an I850E. So if you have an early Dell 8200 with an I850E don't ever get rid of it you have a very rare computer. The I850E was released in 2002. I have a vintage 8200 Dec.2,2001 and it came with an I850 chipset and a 1.8ghz processor
