Change Raid 0 to Raid 1??
I apparently did a stupid thing and ordered Raid 0 (for speed) and now every one tells me that Raid 0 results in an unstable system and I should change it to Raid 1 so I don't have to worry about system failure. Does anyone know what is involved with changing my XPS from Raid 0 to Raid 1? I'm not even sure if this is a hardware issue or a software one? Despite that, I'm quite capable of making system changes with specific directions...anyone know where I might find info on this?
Any help is sincerely appreciated...

Can you give me more on that?- We're working with a big-time VAR on a project at my office, and when he heard that I'd just ordered a system set up as Raid 0, he freaked out, said that was totally a bad idea because Raid 0 was subject to failure and that my data was not secure and that I should have ordered Raid 1...since it was the second time I'd heard it since I got this system, I figure that there must be something to it. Now I'm thinking I should sacrifice the storage for the stability.

Yes I agree that the raid1 would give better data protection no doubt about it. But you have to decide about data protection v/s performance.
I know no one ‘wants’ to loose his/her data. But you also have to think about how many times you might encounter it and ‘are you prepared for disaster recovery?’
If you have a backup schedules configured properly even if the hard drive fails you can get back your data. You will have to re-install the OS and software back again. Probability of drive failing on the raid0 or raid1 are the same.
On the raid1 you will not loose your data and system. But Raid 0 gives better read write performance and importantly gives you more disk space
I have a raid0 configuration. I am a software developer and do mission critical work. I can not afford to loose data at all. But I have setup my backup daily (just the data backup not the system backup) I also do lot of video editing. The performance of the system has been good.
Hope above gives you some help in deciding which configuration to get.

Since you are using it for the business and if do not want to take the blame later, go with the raid1:smileywink:

While with regard to any single drive this statement is correct, it is misleading. If one of your Raid drives fails in Raid 1 no data is lost since the non-failed drive maintains an exact copy of all data and can be used to rebuild the Raid array when a replacement drive is procured.
If one of your Raid drives fails in Raid 0 you will loose ALL the data on BOTH drives in the Raid array; since all data is distributed between both drives; and 1/2 doesn't make a whole.
A Raid 0 with two drives provides a performance increase but TWICE the rate of failure as a single drive. A Raid 1 maintains all data intact unless both drives were to fail simultaneously - an extremely statistically unlikely event.Message Edited by CTskydiver on 01-19-2006 01:04 AM

"Twice the Probability of raid0 failing over raid1." Is also a correct statement.And I agree everything you wrote above.Kelly,
First thing is to get to know what you are buying. If you are comfortable and understand what you are buying then go for it. It is a personal preference and conformability. What ever you do backup is the key.

Which XPS system do you have?
The newer ones support matrix RAID, which is two RAID volumes on 2 drives. Basically, RAID0 on part, RAID1 on the other part. You can configure the system that way and keep your critical files on the RAID1 portion. Matrix manager is on the downloads section under SATA. You can also get the latest version from Intel as well as the user manual. Matrix manager also supports migration from a RAID 0 (2 drives) to RAID 5 (3 or 4 drives) configuration, but not from RAID 0 to RAID 1.
