Dimension 5100 Power Button not doing anything
When I am hitting my power button on my Dimension 5100, nothing is happening. I just want to confirm all other options before I buy a new power supply. There is a green led on the motherboard, near where the power cables and Front Panel cables connect to the MB. It fades eventually but will stay on for sometime after the plug is pulled. It turns back on immediatly after I plug in.
This makes me think there something getting through the PS, just the power button is failing to turn the darn thing on.
I can't get to the power button as its behind the plastic outer cover (which is unremovable as far as I can tell). It seems to connect to the "front panel" of USB ports and headphone/mic openings.
I have unplugged every wire on the MB and made sure they are solidly connected.
Power supply is gone. If it was good then the fans would spin up.

There is no lights on the front panel, no fans, no sound, the only sign of life is that green led on the MB (which only partially seems to be linked to the power)bobbykahiyang

To make sure that the Power Supply isnt working , plug the power to the motherboard except for the processor power(unplug the 4pin power cable for processor power), and turn up the computer if the DVD/CD/Hardisk is run then no problem with the PSBardMedicine

I'm not sure I completely understand that, I know the 4 pin connection you mean, after I unplug that, what do I do?86scirocco

Hello,
I have the same machine and am having exactly the same problem. Took it to a local PC repair shop and he said the motherboard and chipset had gone. It happened when I upgraded to XP pro SP3. PC was doing its restart when it all went.

Ok so take a look at the color of the powerbutton and wethere it is solid or flashing.
Are any of the diagnostic lights on?
Do you hear the fans and drives spin up?
