Dimension 8300 | "Keyboard Failure" Code 39

First I would like to compliment the Dell Tech Support staffer with whom I spent more than an hour or so on Saturday evening last while we troubleshot my Dimension 8300.  Just short of three years' typically reliable service, out of the blue it no longer accepted input from my wireless keyboard or, for that matter, from any other keyboard I tried.  The Dell Techie was courteous, professional and diligent in attempting to resolve the problem, although all that we accomplished was in identifying that the keyboard chip on my Dimension 8300 motherboard had failed.

During reboot sequence the note "Keyboard Failure" appears early, however the keyboard is functional to a point as F2 and F8 may be selected successfully during this phase.  Once Windows begins, touching any key causes a lockup of the keyboard and the mouse.  I have restricted use of the PC at this point, relying upon my Wacom pen and tablet and the Character Map.

The Tech Support staffer said I must replace the motherboard on my D8300.  Is this correct?  From where may I obtain a new motherboard?  What is the cost?  Will this in fact resolve the issue?  I searched the Dell website but could find nothing comparable.  I searched online only to find limited possibilities and these parts questionable as if they were compatible.

Thank you in advance for your helpful suggestions.

Just wondering, can you try a USB keyboard instead of a PS/2 one? That might not get rid of the messages, but it would allow you to use the computer without it locking up and also be cheaper than replacing the whole motherboard.
