Dimension E521 RAM upgrade
I decided to upgrade RAM from 2000MB to 3000. I just ordered a 1000 MB module from Dell intending to install it in DIMM 3. However, I just noticed that it is suggested that these modules be installed in pairs of two. Is it OK to install just the one in DIMM 3? Will this adversely affect performance? Caught me by surprise. Hope you can help. thanks.
:emotion-1: Thanks for your excellent reply. I will have to either send back the module ordered or order a second one. My memory averages 50-60% usage at 2000MB RAM and I thought an extra 1000 might help with speed but looks like that was wrong. I don't think I really need another 2000. Any idea on what my smart choice would be? :emotion-6:

If you have two open memory slots, return the 1gb module and buy 2 x 512mb modules, this would give you a total of 3gb of RAM in the Dual Channel Mode and for a 32-bit system, ample memory.

Yes, installing only one module in a DDR2 system like the e521, performance will take a hit.
For maximum performance, memory needs to be installed in matching pairs.
