You should shut everything down when installing programs.
Go to START/RUN/TYPE-MSCONFIG/OK/STARTUP/ uncheck everything but SCANREG & SYS TRAY / Yes to restart.

( This is done in selective startup )

Install your software / restart / go back into MSCONFIG and select what you want to run at startup. You don't need everything running all of the time, this also frees up alot of memory. you will notice a great increase in performance.

If you are running on a network also turn back on NAV & ZONE ALARM

There is no need to disable Zone Alarm. I would disable NAV when downloading updates from the Windows Update Page.

as to the how-disable? part, when I right-click on the zonealarm icon on my system tray I get a menu that allows me to shut down zonealarm. A reboot or a trip to the start/programs menu will allow me to restart za. Bruce
