"lag" problems with Dimension 4700

My Son runs a Dimension 4700 and has significant "lag" issues when playing World of Warcraft and now Call of Duty 4. The symptom of the problem - when playing these games his computer freezes for 5 - 20 secs on WOW and 15 - 30 secs on COD4. It looks like its a connection problem but we do not have the same "lag" problems on any of our other machines on the same network (Inspiron 531, Dimension 3000, Latitude 610). We had this problem with the initial configuration (Pentium 4 2.8 GHZ, Windows XP SP2, 512 MB ram, and basic graphics card) and with new configuration (Same CPU, Same OS, 1GB of RAM and NVidia GForce 7300). Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance for your reply.

4700 and 3000 should have comparable performance.  Do they have the same software complement?  'Busy' software--Norton/Mcafee are notorious--can preempt system resources, more so depending on settings.  So can things like having XP 'fast-find indexing' turned on.

Rather than me half-quoting what Windows services you can do without, research it yourself on gamer sites.  That's where I learned it.  Those also can preempt resources, when there are enough of them running at once.  Stuff like Windows update, Windows time, both are largely superfluous and take up system as well as network runtime.

Some Dimension 4700's had heat & fan issues too. You might want to check for a heavy dust buildup; might be worth a look anyways....

The McAffee angle is certainly worth checking. I have taken it off all machines over time. On this machine even after going through the exhastive un-install process, i still have a remmant. Thanks!

The remnant of Mcafee is not capable of running.  The only resource it uses is a few K on the drive.

Make sure 'fast find indexing' is turned off.

Disable unneeded Windows services.  Research to identify, disable one or two at a time, and write down the ones you disable in case one of them turns out to be necessary (you can turn them back on just as easily).
