missing files

I ran Norton Win Doctor and got the problem category box and it said there are 5 missing files.

I have no idea what these belong to. Maybe it's the reason my computer crashes more often then normal???

The 5 missing files were:

1. c:\Tools_95\BACKUP\BACKUP32.EXE
cannot access a necessary file "icommon.dll

2. c:\Tools_95\BACKUP\BACKUP32.EXE
cannot access a necessary file "img_util.dll

3. c:\Tools_95\copydisk.exe
cannot access a necessary file "img_util.dll

4. c:\Tools_95\copydisk.exe
cannot access a necessary file "imgdll32.dll

5. c:\Tools_95\Guest95.exe
cannot access a necessary file "imgdll32.dll

Anyone have any idea what these are or how to correct them? Seems Norton hasn't a clue what to do, and I don't either...

    Palimino,

You can find most, if not all, of those missing .dll files here. The first two missing files relate to Windows backup, the next to to a copy utility, and the last one to an Iomega Zip backup program. Unless you were trying to run one of these three programs, the missing files would have no bearing on any other problems you might be having with your system.

What a wealth of information! Thank you. Now, I tried to install these and they ended up on my desktop. Is there anywhere else I can save them so I don't have so many icons on my desktop? Also, after I installed them to the desktop, I ran Norton again and it said they are still missing.

Palimino...I don't know how these wound up on your desktop. Perhaps you unzipped them to there?

I am fairly certain they belong in your C:\Windows\System folder. Copy the .dll's to there and you can then delete the zipped downloads and any other material (read-me's, etc.) that was included.

    Palimino,

If you look closely at the messages it looks like you are missing 3 dynamic link libraries and not 5 files. The executable programs listed call upon the dll files to run. The 3 dll files are part of the Iomegaware software needed for a ZIP drive. The Tools_95 folder contains all the Iomegaware software. Be sure to restore the dll files to the Tools_95 folder or 1-step backup for zip & jaz, Iomega Copy Machine, Guest95 will hang when they try to find the needed dll files. If you have the Iomegaware CD you can restore those files from it. If not, and it is likely if your system came from DELL during the time when they shipped their systems sans the Iomega CD, then look in the Tools_95/backup folder and see if they are there.

On the other hand if you don't have a ZIP drive then the TOOLS_95 folder is superfluous and I wasted some bandwidth in this thread. ;-)

    JeffL,
Thank you for taking the time to try to help me. Maybe I'm not understanding what you are saying, because what I did was to go to the dll files thet Dell sent me, found the ones I am missing, downloaded them to C:\Windows, and expanded them to a Tools_95 folder, which I had to create. Norton still says they are missing, and now Acrobat reader will not open. What did I do wrong? I'm kind of new at this so please give step by step instructions if you can.
    Thank you.

    Palimino,

Sure. I'll try to clarify...The Tools_95 folder exists on your computer if you have a ZIP drive and IOMEGA software installed. The folder TOOLS_95 is created when you install the software. Questions: Does your system currently have a ZIP drive? Or did it at one time? Also, what operating system is this? At one time DELL shipped ordered systems with a ZIP drive and the software pre-installed, but without the media(CD) necessary to reinstall the IOMEGA software if you ever had to reformat and reinstall your OS and/or programs. This meant that if you wanted to have a backup of the Iomegaware you had to back up the TOOLS_95 folder. For precaution there was a 'backup' sub-folder within the TOOLS_95 directory that contained backup copies of critical DLL files for the software and I referred to this in my previous post.

I don't think there's a connection with Acrobat Reader. I think it's a coincidence. Are you saying that you if you double-click .pdf files that A/R will not run, or that the shortcut on the START menu doesn't open Acrobat Reader?

I am not familiar with Norton utilities or what algorithm it uses for determining missing files, but from the first message you posted the programs referenced by/for the DLL files are Iomega files. Perhaps you have "hooks/links" in the registry linked to these DLLs. If you had to create the Tools_95 folder then this leads me to believe that you don't have a ZIP drive or Iomegaware installed. If you don't have a ZIP drive then you don't need the DLLs. But just to be safe don't delete them from your hard drive. Just append the files with a suffix you'll remember. If you do have a ZIP drive and don't have the software then you can download the software free from IOMEGAs web site. Post again if you need further clarification or have more ???

    JeffL,
Yes, my computer has a zip drive, zip 100.
The operating system is win 98.
The zip was pre-installed and I have no CD to reinstall.
I updated my Adobe Acrobat Reader and now it works, so that was just a coincidence.
I can't find a back-up folder either. It must have dissappeared along with the dll files???
I was just now informed by my husband that we have an Iomega Tools version DM5305 that has been unopened. Could this be what I need to install?

    Palimino,

Yes! I am fairly confident that is the disk that contains all the Iomega utilities and files that are needed. That's the disk that DELL owners like myself didn't receive with their ZIP drive. Since I didn't get a disk with my ZIP drive I can't say with 100% certainty that is THE disk, however.

I cannot explain why you had to create the TOOLS_95 folder though. My guess is that someone did some "housekeeping" and un-installed Iomega Tools or that the Tools were installed in a directory other than the default.

Well, That wasn't the disk I needed so I guess the next step will be to call Dell and see if I can get the disk. Thanks for the help you have been.
