You have 4Gb of RAM. However, if you are using a 32bit Operating System you can use only 3~3.5GB of it. Only a 64bit OS can use more RAM.

So in reality you have 4GB of RAM with about 3GB usable.

Guess that you have a Dimension 9150 [DXP051], unfortunately you did not post the version of windows installed and if it is the 32-bit, or 64-bit version.

When you have a 32-bit system, this does not recognize 4gb of memory, 3gb± is all a 32-bit system can address.

Basically what it means is, while you can install 4gb of memory in the system, the reason it’s not recognized is mainly due to 32-bit processors and/or 32-bit applications on memory address limitations.

64-bit processors & operating systems will recognize beyond the 32-bit limitation.
