Speaker icon gone
The speaker icon is missing from my task bar. I checked the connections and all looks right. Speakers on, green light indicator is on. When I tried to fix this from the Control Panel, "no audio device" message appeared. I don't have the owner's manual, but I did try a couple of things from dell.com site. No success. Should I system restore? Should I reinstall software?

What model PC? What Operating System? What kind of sound, integrated audio or an add on Soundblaster sound Card? We can't give you specific help without that.
One suggestion is to use the System Restore and restore the PC back to a date when it did work. System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.
If that doesn't fix it, start by reinstalling the correct Sound Drivers.

I would only do a system restore or reinstall software as a last resort. I have Windows XP. If I go to Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices, and select the Volume tab, under Device Volume I have a check box that says "Place volume icon in the taskbar". I have that box checked. See if you can do similar on your system.
