USB devices not automatically installing
I have a client that is experiencing an odd issue with most (if not all) of their OptiPlex 330's. Whenever we connect a USB device (flash drive, printer, camera, GPS) the system makes the USB connect noise, but the device is not recognized. This happens even if we've installed the driver software (such as with the printers). The device shows up with a question mark in Device Manager, and if I go into the device's properties the status shows as "Driver not installed." If I click Reinstall Driver, then tell it to automatically install the software, everything goes through automatically and we can use the device. Once I go through this process for a device, we can use that particular device without a problem, but any subsequent devices have to go through the same process. This works as a workaround, but if the customer has to do this for every device, on every computer, they are going to become quite irrate.
I have one PC (identical to the others that are having the issue) that I was doing troubleshooting on. I made sure the latest chipset drivers were installed, as well as the latest BIOS, but the problem remains. This even happens for devices that don't normally require additional drivers (such as my Kingston 8GB Datatraveller). All systems are running Windows XP. Some have Service Pack 3, the others have Service Pack 2, but all are experiencing the issue regardless of Service Pack.
Does anyone have any ideas?
