Windows crashes...

My sister has a four-year-old Dell 2400 with WinXP. A few days ago, when she booted up, Windows began to load, then the screen went black and her mouse and keyboard went out. The power light on the tower was still on. The same thing happened after several attempts to boot.

When I went around to look at it, I booted into safe mode and began to do a system restore. Right in the middle of the restore the screen went blank.

I opened the case and made sure all cables were firmly seated. Grasping at straws I booted to the CMOS setup and looked at the event viewer. It only mentioned something about a keyboard malfunction.

Can anyone give me an idea of what might be going on here?

Thanks.

What is the reading of the power button LED, solid green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber?

What is the sequence of the Diagnostic Lights on the back panel?

    Bev.

    Hi Bev,

The power button LED is solid green and the diagnostic lights are all lit. I'm beginning to wonder if the problem might be with the keyboard or the monitor, although the latter stayed on the entire time I was in the BIOS.

    Color me confused.

Try a different keyboard and monitor.

The diagnostic lights have two colours, Green and Yellow, what would colour sequence be?

    Bev.

My sister said all the lights were green.

I'm going to borrow my wife's keyboard & monitor and see if that makes a difference. I'm heading out of town for a few days starting tomorrow so at least she'll know whether she needs to be shopping for a new computer or just keyboard and/or monitor.

    Thanks for your help Bev.
