I called Verizon support and the tech told me the reason I couldn't connect was because Verizon required 85% system resources, and I only was showing 60-65%.  That's a common response from any provider that doesn't know the answer to your question, and, as applies to Windows XP (if not 9x operating systems as well) complete garbage.  (This is after a clean install with no other software other than my sound blaster.)  I am not real familiar with which files need to run, but the tech was surprised to see SVCHOST.EXE running and using so much memory (about 5 occurences using 32,956k of memory)  That's not at all uncommon.  I have 6 instances running on this PC.  This PC is also working very well.

Now, I didn't install anything except Windows XP Home. None of the stuff Dell sent with the PC... Did I forget to install anything?  That depends.  Did you install the device drivers?  (Note:  They are part of "the stuff Dell sent with the PC.") Everything was working ok before the clean install,  The drivers were probably installed at that point, too.  I have a network card and could connect to the internet fine. (One of the reasons I did the clean install was because I got a couple of viruses I was having trouble getting rid of)  "A couple of viruses?" Working with outdated AV definitions?  No AV application?  Viruses do not spontaneously appear on properly protected PCs.

I am pretty sure, after I had my initial problems, I did another clean install with the original XP disc that came with my pc.

I did have Norton and I still got a virus. (it was updated at the time I got the virus) More specifically, I had a hijacker that I could not get rid of. I tried a couple of times, used ad-aware and spy-bot, tried numerous things and still no luck)

Thanks to all that responded. I downloaded the drivers from the Dell site and installed. Once that was done, I was able to connect to the internet.

I am still having problems trying to get my 2nd hard drive to show up as more than 32mb. I used the maxblast software, but it doesn't help. This drive was working fine before I did the XP clean install. Anyone have any thoughts?

I fixed my harddrive problem. I needed to make a boot disc with the maxblast3 software. Everything is working fine now.
