OK this is wierd i went to work yesterday and everything was good with the laptop. I come home and my laptop will not start with the battery in even if its plugged in but it starts fine with the battery out? Its like the battery just went dead with no warning. Is the battery shot? or is somethiing else going on?
thanks

Most likely, yes. But it is also possible that the charging circuitry on the battery is shot, but only exposed when connected to the battery. Try to get a known good battery, and see if you have the same problem. You can also try the swap in the other direction (i.e., put the battery in a known good laptop).

Hi ,
Welcome to Dell community forum.
As you have said that the computer would power up just the adapter the issue might be with the battery but before we conclude try booting into BIOS (F2 on Dell Logo) and check for the Adapter type.
If you have active warranty, you can contact me directly by clicking on my user name, add me as your friend, and send me the system service tag and phone # with address.

Hi,
Thank you for your response.
Both the known good adapters are not recognized, It might be an issue with the adapter port on the motherboard.

thanks my warranty is up but i have no problems changing the power jack out myself as long as their is no soldering involved. I can get a replacement from http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=category&id=141&subid=297&refine=dc+power+jack. By the looks of the picture it has 1 screw and it looks like it just plugs into the MB. But in the description it says soldering is involved? can you with your contacs confirm if it needs to be soldered or not?? thanks

According to the service manual, the jack on this model is not soldered - it is attached to a cable that simply plugs into the system board.
