Black screen

Hi,

My wife's Inspiron 8600 display is completely black.  At first, it would go black, but then come on again after a reboot.  Now it stays black.  It's not dim, you can't see any display at all.  An external monitor works fine when plugged into it.   Does anyone have any suggestions what the cause is?

Thanks.

Most likely it's a dead backlight - contact an LCD repair specialist.  The cost to have it repaired should run $100-150.

Thanks ejn63.  That's probably what I'll do.  I've been reading a bit in other places since I posted and was wondering why you lean towards a dead backlight rather than a dead inverter.  Is it because the screen is completely black?

Given the age of the system I'd bet on a bulb failure - they have a finite lifespan.

Inverters do fail as well, but this one is more likely the bulb.
