Dell Precision M90 overheating!

Hi,

I have a M90 with Quadro 2500m, core duo 2.16 and 2 GB of ram. I use it to play games and I haven’t played a game that it can’t run.

I noticed all of a sudden it started lagging and the screen started flashing after about 10-20 minutes of play, it took me a while to work out what was causing it. I found out that the GPU temp was going up to 100c and the CPU was about 60-65c while I was playing games. It used to run at about 60-70c.

Could it be full of dust because the room I am in is quite dusty I clean my desktop regularly.

So does anyone know what the best way to clean it would be? E.g. take it apart and clean of just clean it together with the compressor?

If you don’t think it would be because it is dirty what else could it be?
Cheers,

Nick

Boot from your DELL Drivers Disc, and choose the custom test option in the diagnostics. Choose overheat symptom and let it do its diags and see if the fans and other sensors are working ok.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I will do that when i get a chance but i will do the whole thing which takes 3 hours. I actually pulled the laptop apart totally. Cleaned everything and built it from the ground up.
It brough the temp from 100c to 65c while playing games. There was quite a bit of dust in there.
    Cheers,

I don't think it has anything to do with cleaning.  I'm experiencing the same problem with my M90.  Certain games cause the unit to overheat and Dell Support has not been able to solve my problem.  If anyone has any suggestions, please advise.

    Thanks

    Hi,
Cleaning it did make a big differance even though it didn't fully solve the problem. I found a program called I8kfanGUI which you can choose how fast you want your fans to go. Just before i start playing games I put them to full and it is fine. The video card gets to about 65c while playing for about an hour. The fans arent that loud anyway so a lot of the time i just leave them on full.

Thanks for the information, the software program worked and was able to play with the fans set at high.

I've tried all you mentioned, but the result is all the same. So perhaps it has to do with cleaning - my m90 (T2600,2.16,2500M,2GBRAM,BIOSA07) has already been dismantled by a technician 3 times, cleaned up (and I even got new 2500M!) but in aprox. 2 months it always becomes congested...

I8kafnGUI with fans speeds set to max doesn't help. The funny thing is that I have even resigned to playing games, but I really desperately need to use Crysis Editor, with which I am experiencing the same trouble (computer after some time auto-shut down and it gives out a code #M1004 before new boot).

I don't have time to learn how to dismantle the machine - I am not a technician. My room is not extremly dusty-it as a normal appartment-so I don't see any reason to pay almost 100euros (every 2 months!) for professional cleaning. So is there any oher idea how to solve this out? I know about those cooling pads with fans but then I start to feel ridiculous...as it doesn't solve the problem. Degrading to Quadro FX 2500M A00 driver seems ridiculous too. This is the first time I'm getting dissapointed with Dell..

    Thanks for any advice.

    Cheers

    Hi,
I got mine as ex demo so i have no warranty. I have since cleaned it again and now the temp never goes over 35 idle on XP and 41 on vista. When playing games for 1 - 2 hours the temp never goes above 65 - 70. This is with the fans on full.
It is extremley easy to rebuild them from the ground up, anyone with the time can do it. If you are worried about doing just buy an antistatic rist band and even just write down what goes where. It takes me about 40min to do it so allow yourself 1 - 2 hours to do it.
