Dissatisfied Customer

Back on March 24th when I bought Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I was greatly disappointed to see that the last time Dell bothered to update the graphics driver on the Inspiron 9300 for those of us running Windows XP (who isn't, unless you're foolish enough to get Windows Vista in it's still basically beta stage) and running the ATI MobilityRadeon X300 was on September 14th, 2005.

The BIOS for the driver hasn't been updated since *June* 14th, 2005.

Am I the only one sorely disappointed and dissatisfied by this, as well as by the fact that we can't get our drivers from ATI, but from a company that is dragging it's feet while major video game companies release games that we can no longer effectively run?

That to even stand a chance we must resort to OmegaDrivers, which aren't supported, and yet recommended by dell technical support representatives?

Apparantly Dell is content to not update its graphics drivers, and to let OmegaDrivers do it's work for them.

Neverwinter Nights 2 was released a day ago, and there are still no changes or updates. A company that is on the ball and has its customers first *anticipates their needs*.

It's not just the video drivers either, I'm greatly disappointed at how few and far between updates to the system as a whole have been.

Am I alone in this?

Most users I think upgrade their video drivers at the manufacturer's website(ATI,Nvidia,Intel, etc.

    elauzel...

Not trying to criticize your post...I owned a Toshiba laptop at one time...had it for three years...only ONE driver update the entire time I owned it. Had to go to nvidia to get the drivers for video. Yamaha for sound and other kinds of OEM's. Toshiba makes Dell look like Microsoft...trust me on that.

    For ATI drivers:

    http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/

That will take care of that. When desktop drivers are released...go here and get the mobile drivers...

BTW...Omega does quite a nice job repackaging...and oftentimes fixes bugs

No offense, but this is pretty common. Most manufactures will only support updates for their products for a limited amount of time. There are various reasons for this. They are constantly developing new products and it just isn't usually in their best interests to keep updating older, obsolete hardware.

Like Bobmitmen, I had a Compaq laptop that had one update for the video driver in the 4 years I owned it.

    Funny...

Thanks to Toshiba...I learned how to hack the .inf files for Nvidia drivers to keep the video card up to date. Then...there were the Panasonic DVD RAM drivers. For ATI...Omega actually puts out a better driver set than ATI! Options are out there to keep your system up to date...search around...you might be surprised.

Just to add to the distaste...

Purchased XPS 17 L701X 11/23/2010 with the express requirement that the RAM but up-gradable to 16GB.

Since the machine was delivered I have been experiencing performance issues to which numerous calls to TS and Solution Stations has resulted in 3 complete rebuilds to factory and parts replacements.  (See my history in your call center and Solution Stations service for this machine .)

Now that it has been determined that I need a RAM upgrade I called Sales (12/17/2011) to purchase the Upgrade to 16GB (4x4Gb Chips) Ram as advertised and clearly displayed in the Dell Support Center software.  I called TS to assist with the install of the chips (12/23/2011) where it was discovered that the motherboard only has 2 slots.  I am then told that Dell does NOT certify the 2x8GB chips and that this machine is only up-gradable to 8GB Ram.

I was informed that during the purchase Dell offered an optional i7 CPU (w/3GB Video Ram) and 16 GB (4x4GB) Ram... NOT being a gamer, but a professional programmer for over 20 years with my own software business since 1989, video performance is NOT a criteria BUT System RAM is and I took special care to make very sure that the purchased machine could be upgraded to 16GB Ram.

I am not being offered any solution by TS and it has been suggested that this was a misrepresentation on the product and a refund or exchange for the correct (required) product is in order.

    Thanks

This has been discussed many times before.  The ONLY way to assure you're getting the 4-socket board is to order the system with more than 8G of RAM at purchase.
