Hardware problem or software Problem?

In the middle of May 2008 my Inspiron 1501 laptop started shutting down unexpectedly and there were no BSOD winows.  Just - wham - like the power in the building had gone off but being a laptop the battery should have kicked in but it didn't.

So after numerous call to Bangalore and a BIOS update from Bangalore, it was "determined" that it was a software problem and not a hardware problem.  (I am not convinced of that.)  So, I was told to do a clean install of Vista and while the tech person said he would send me detailed instructions via e-mail he did not.  I had to write back and then someone else referred me to a third party website for those instructions.  Well, after several attempts (uninstall, reinstall, uninstall, reinstall, etc.) I finally got things back to working order, or so I thought. Yesdterday it worked like a charm but now other problems come up such as not being to load or start windows when trying to boot up the computer or other errors flashing across the screen.

I have had it.  This machine is under warranty until February 2009 and I expect Dell to fix it or replace it.  What do I have to do to accomplish that?  Is it possible to talk with a live person at corporate headquarters in this country???   I have sent a letter to Dell in Round Rock, Texas but so far there has been no reply.  (An earlier letter to Austin, Texas was returned as "undeliverable as addressed.)  I am now ready to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau as well as contacting the Attoryneys-General of Texas and California and going public with this via "7 on your side" at KGO-TV in San Francisco.   Before doing that I hope that someone reading this posting in this forum will have a better idea.  Thanks for reading this.

The only thing that comes to mind is maybe the processor is getting hot. Like the fan is not working or it’s not getting enough airflow through the laptop.

I’ve herd others that contact the tech support were told to reinstall the OS seems like a cure all from Dell.

    hope this helps, Blair

Hi there,  oh the fan works OK, in fact it sometimes seems to be working overtime if the sound is any indication.  That is, running at a very fast speed.  I have also checked air vents and they are in good shape also.  I agree with you that the processor might be overheating.  That would seem to be a hardware problem and one which would seem to something they rather not fix especially if it meant sending someone to my residence.  Yes, blame the OS, unplug this and that, plug them back in again, re-start, etc., etc.  That seems to be the total sum of tech support via phone.  I agree totally.
