Inspiron 8500 Distorted Screen

Hello. I own an Inspiron 8500, running Windows XP SP2.

Recently my screen started to show vertical yellow lines. Furthermore, whenever I turn on the computer, the Dell screen is also garbled. When I try to load into Safe Mode or Diagnostics, the screen is so jumbled that I can not read any of the text. However, I am still able to log onto windows and use all of the other programs. The only exception, so far, has been my DVD player. I have yet to try to use an external monitor since there is none available to me.

Is this a problem with the LCD screen or with a video card? At times the amount of yellow horizontal and vertical bars seems to correlate with the amount of programs I am running, but that might just be my lack of perception. If it is a problem with either the LCD or video card, how can I go about repairing it and if I need to purchase replacement parts, how much will it cost?

It sounds like a faulty video card, but it could be the panel; attach an external monitor to differentiate. The video card for your system should not be that expensive - $150 at most. It's a proprietary, Dell-only part. If it's the panel, see if you can have it repaired - cost, perhaps $150. If it can't be repaired and you need a new one, it'll be more like $400-500.

Last night, as I was typing up my thesis, my screen suddenly cleared itself and I was able to run a Diagnostic. I tested everything associated with the video card and the screen and it all seemed fine. What could explain this sudden return to normalcy? However this morning, I did notice some distortion in the Dell splash screen. Does this mean it is definitely the video card?

Does it have anything to do with the fact that several hours before the screen cleared I had reseated the video card and the screen connector?

And thank you for the response.

Sounds like the video card to me. Just get a cheap one on ebay. There are some of the 32mb ATI's for like $30.
