LAN connection inoperative

This is for an Inspiron 1764 that is about 2 1/2 years old.  Just out of it's 2 year warranty, naturally.

Out of the blue, it quit receiving the internet signal via the in-home wired network.  I tried a new cable to no avail.  I then moved the laptop down near the DSL ActionTec Modem/Router and plugged it directly into one of the ports.  Still no internet.  Three other computers are successfully operating off that Modem/Router.

I then went to the control panel and selected 'network connections'  It showed the NIC but stated that there was ' cable has been dis connected'.  I disabled and re-enabled it to no avail.

What is going on?  Is the NIC integrated into the motherboard or is it a seperate 'card'?

I assume, at this point, this is where the problem must lie??

Thanks for the response.  Last evening, after I posted this question, I did go to device manager to check out the status of the NIC.  It showed it to be working.  Scratching my head, I went ahead and clicked on the FireFox icon and the homepage jumped right up.  I then went out and checked the port lite on the modem/router and it was glowing.

This condition had lasted for two days and then seemingly self corrected.  It is a mystery and makes me think that it is liable to happen again but this time I will know to go straight to Device Mgr to check it out.  Should it happen again, how will I know if it is a software/driver issue or a physical device (motherboard) issue?

    Thanks again!
