Latitude D600 DSL/NETWORK etc. Help!

Hello. NEWB/FIRST POST. Please forgive if i'm posting this in the wrong section.

I have a Dell Latitude D600. I'm aware of wireless internet, but i'm not ready for that yet. I have DSL at home and I want tp hook my Laptop up to that. When I plug the DSL cable into the laptop nothing happens, I can't connect or anything. The laptop won't recognize the cable. I can connect with dial-up via phone line, but that is slow as heck. Please Help.
-Thanks To All in Advance!

Most DSL setups require you to install drivers on the computer.  Did you follow the DSL install instructions, put the install disk in, etc?

I tried the disc and it keeps telling me that it can't make a connection. I don't know why it would need a connection for installing a driver. Please Help.

    -Thanks

this is probably not the best place forum - but anyway....
    A few basic questions -
which DSL service do you have,
do you have a DSL modem connected to the incoming service ?
are the LEDs on the DSL modem all ON ?  Are any OFF ?
do you have an Ethernet cable between the DSL modem & your laptop ?

BTW - I would think it would be a lot easier to go WiFi with a laptop,
and connect a wireless router to the DSL modem and run WiFi on the laptop.
All of the laptops in our house run that way - surfing on the couch -
