poor battery life
Have been through 3 batteries in the last 6-8 months on my 8100, which is almost always run on AC power. Last night another battery died that was only about 2 months old. Was fine, 100% charged one minute, then the blinking orange light the next. Wont recharge now. If I buy a new battery, it will be fine..for awhile. Could a hardware problem be causing this? Any solutions? Also, should I be able to run off AC power alone, with no battery in? System turns on, but shuts down within seconds when plugged in, but no battery. Likewise when its plugged in with my now dead battery in. Will start but then cut out maybe 10 seconds later...maybe 60 seconds...once in awhile I might even make it all the way to the desktop before it cuts out.

the issue you have is still not clear, does the laptop work with the battery [ the dead one ] and the AC power or the laptop just works for few seconds like this ? if it can work on AC power only , then try run hardware diagnostics which can be accessed by F12 key menue and you might require the Utility Cd as it a old laptop for the same.

With the dead battery in, AC power works intermittently. Power might shut off within seconds of me turning it on or I might make it to the window's starting up page and rarely to the desktop. With no battery in, it cuts out seconds after turning on. Previously when batteries died (dead battery in, running AC) this would also happen but, though it might take a few times I would eventually make it to the desktop and could often go 10-30 minutes before it would abrubtly cut off. A new battery always fixes this. Also, before latest battery died, I noticed even though I was plugged in, the taskbar icon would often swtich back and forth between showing notebook was running on AC or battery. Even though it said it was running on battery power, battery never drained. Last night I reseated the battery charger board, but that made no difference.
I'm not running any USB devices off this, re the microsoft patch. Did just recently start using a PCMIA wireless card.

It is recommended to always put the battery in the notebook even you are plugged-in. The battery should have 1 year warranty. If it dies before warranty ends, ask for replacement.
There was an issue before about Windows XP and battery life in portable computers (notebook). Microsoft released a fix KB918005. Try to install it. It says:
"Install this update to address an issue where a Windows XP-based portable computer may not have as long a battery life under certain circumstances when certain USB 2.0 devices are connected. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer."
