Power adapter problems??

I am noticing some issues on my Inspiron 5100. Sometimes when I power up the computer, the BIOS says the power adapter isn't supported (it detected 75W I believe). I am using the one that was shipped with the computer. I have continued using my computer since it still works. But I am wondering if the "failing" adapter will affect my computer or could break something? I noticed the computer has been running slower and hotter, but I just didn't know if it was the computer being overworked or if it was from the power adapter...a virus scan that normally takes 20-30 mins took over an hour :smileysurprised:. I should probably look on eBay for a new adapter and reformat my HD to get rid of the uneeded junk.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

What you're describing sounds like the first stage of mainboard failure - if the LED on the adapter is off, it may be faulty; if it's ON, it's good, and the system board is beginning to fail.

This is a defect in many Dell laptops (at least 10 different models have the same issue).  There apparently has been no recall around this issue.  I have the same exact issue on my 5160, and if you read many of the other posts on this forum you will find most other posts are around the same issue.

Dell will not fix this for free unless you are under warrenty.  So you either pay for a new motherboard or buy a new laptop.  I for one will be buying a new machine, certainly not a Dell, which is a shame because I own 5 Dell machines currently

You may see the same issue with another brand - HP/Compaq, Sony and others have had similar issues - not surprising, given that the company that built the systems for Dell is the second-largest maker of notebooks in the world, and builds for those companies as well.

Get a 3-year minimum warranty on any notebook you buy.

I've had the same problem with my Inspiron 8600 before. Make sure that the adapter is securely plugged into your system. Even a millimeter of seperation seems to make the difference between your system accepting or rejecting your power adapter
