Primary HD drive not found

Replaced Inspiron 8200 toasted hard disk with a Samsung HM121HC 120gig. The BIOS was update to version A11 and setting to "automatic" or "thorough" still end up with message "Primary HD drive not found". Floppy drive works but CD drive is toasted. Is it possible to manually  get the  BIOS to recognise the hard  disk  and how. Any advice? Thanks.

When you installed the new drive, did you transfer the blade adapter from the back of the original drive to the pins of the new one?  Without that adapter, the drive isn't connected to the system - and you won't see the CD drive either, since it shares a channel with the hard drive.
