problems with disconnecting from internet

i have an inspiron 5150. and i use a dial-up connection and have Windows XP. everytime i create an internet connection it erases itself when i shut-down or go on Stand by. and when i do get online i cant disconnect bc the connection doesnt show-up in the task bar. does any body know whats wrong?

    look in control panel>network connections>your dialup connection, right click it>properties & under general check the bottom box for showing the icon ...............

    ive tried that but it never works. And everytime i create a new connection i make sure its checked but it still doesnt show up. everytime i want to connect to the internet i have to create a new connection bc the old one deletes itself
