Public Address System
How can I set my laptop up to use a microphone and external speakers as a PA system? I can do it with my desktop PC but not my laptop. The problem seems to be the limitations of teh Sigma Tel Audio system.
Ideas?

You can do it with some of the laptop models and operating systems. You should include that information.

Hi - first time using this forum approach for assistance.
My laptop is a DELL Inspiron I6400, Window XP Service Pack 3

You should be able to do this with an i6400. You want whatever goes into the mic jack to come out of the speakers, right? That is input monitoring. For some reason Dell has that turned off, but you can turn it back on in the Registry. Go to the Input Monitoring FAQ for instructions.
i have grouped the instructions according to operating system and audio driver. Most people with i6400 have the Sigmatel R171789 audio driver installed. If that is the one you have then follow Instruction Set 3.
If you do not have R171789 then you most probably have Sigmatel R122161. If that is the case then use Instruction Set 2.
If you don't know which one you have, go to your hard drive, to
c:\dell\drivers\Rxxxxxx
Expand all folders and subfolders there. The folder that has a subfolder named "WDM" is the audio driver.
After you have enabled input monitoring, connect your powered speakers to the headphone jack and you should be all set.
