Return support

Bought a new Inspiron Laptop from Dell on line, charged the batteries for 12 hours as soon as I got it, but as soon as it powers up it powers right down.  Called tech support and was told that the service tag / express code wasn't in the database because my computer is so new.  I guess I'm supposed to believe keeping a database updated with current order information is something too difficult to accomplish?  They said "the tool to update the database" was down, and I had to call back the next day.  They gave me a Case Number to make calling back easier.  Called back the next day, and was told they couldn't find the Case Number.  Got transferred and put on hold for a half hour.  Called back, got transferred and got a busy signal.  Called back again twice with similar results.  Finally had enough.  Called back and said I want to return this merchandise, tell me what I need to do to accomplish that.  Got told that the department that handles returns is closed and I have to call back in an hour.  ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.  I have always been a loyal Dell customer and was a sysadmin for 25 years.  My previous company was a big Dell customer -- I don't know what has happened to Dell, but if I ever manage to get this laptop returned I'm going to go to Staples and buy an HP.  Unbelievable.

if you return your Dell, do yourself a VERY big favor and don't make the mistake of buying HP.   Their support is far worse - and their reliability track record, the worst.

I wish you no problems then - if you do have problems with HP, you'll think Dell wasn't so bad, after all.

I honestly dont know about HP laptops but I've never had a problem with HP desktops.  The ONLY issue with HP is they have flooded the market with their products making it kind of hard to pick between one hp or the other.  My mom has a new compaq as well with zero problems and their support has always been wonderful, then again I use the email not the phone.
