screen doesn't work

The screen of my laptop inspiron 5160 doesn't work anymore. It just 'bloob' stopped. After a restart  a little performance was showed and than it stayed 'black'! Can anyone help me?

    If an external monitor works OK, the screen likely needs a backlight repair.

    but suppose an external monitor does NOT work (even with Fn+F8) on my 5000 w 98 SE and
        cold boot post delivers 2 short beeps then terminates and
       cntrol alt delete thereafter gives 1 long then 2 short beeps then termination
           Note a book I have for windows 98 SEe says 1 long and 2 short is video
