Studio 1735 Display problem

Hi All,

My dispaly is WUXGA 1920x1200. Mostly I am pleased with the sharp and clear picture, however, I have two problem with it. Firstly, the color on the screen looks cold - gray and blue biased. It is obviouse when comparing with other laptops. Secondly, I can sometime see some "flow of electrons" on the screen. What do I mean by flow electrons? Hmmm, when I display a steady picture or browse a website, I can sometime see something (looks like electron or little dots) moving from right to left horizontally in certain aera of the screen. I am sure that this is not the effect of the picture or the site. I tried with other laptops, they all looked fine. This happens often when the color is light grey. For example, www.ebay.co.uk, there is a menu bar with "Categories", "Shops", "eBay Motors" and "Safty Centre". The bar is in grey color. The upper half is lighter than the lower half. "Flow" appears only on upper half of the bar, and it always "flows".  My system is vista. Does anyone have the same problem? Thank you for all advises!

Regards

Leon

For instance... have you at least tried reinstalling/updating the graphics drivers?

This doesnt seem to make any difference.   Looks to be a hardware flaw to me.  If you have a grayscale gradient, the noise only shows up at certain greyscale levels, in my case when its just off white.

I have exactly the same problem, and I know of at least one other user on another forum who has it as well.  Ive found that it can be changed if you tweak the gamma of the screen using the ATI catyalst controls.  I also notice that it can be made worse by looking at the screen tilted.

Its more like an interference pattern, or noise from a component.

For 95% of the time I dont find it all that much of an issue, and I suspect that a lot of people have it, but have never noticed it.  I a

Welcome to the forums Leon :emotion-21:

Have you tried doing anything to resolve the problem yourself yet?

For instance... have you at least tried reinstalling/updating the graphics drivers?

When a system has a display problem of some sort, reinstalling graphics drivers should be the first priority :emotion-55:

Thank you for your reply tocster. Where did you buy the laptop from? Did Dell give you any advise? I trying to talk to dell see what they can do.

Btw, if you change the gamma value, doesnt the picture look weird/uncomfortable? what value have you tried :)

Just an update, I talked to a customer adviser on line. He said that was the feature of the display of a certain brand (manufacturer). It cannot be changed. Both the blue-grey color and the noise. That does not make sense. Fortunately my laptop is under warranty. He arranged a techinician to my home to replace the display. However, he said there was no guarantee that I get a LCD of a different brand. The problem may remain...lets hope I can get rid of that.

I agree that its a hardware flaw.  I suspect that most people get the lower res screen, and thats why its not more of an issue.

The speakers are extremely bad - I also find the touch pad goes a bit weird sometimes as well.

I got the laptop via the dell Australia web site.  I havent contacted Dell over the issue - mainly because of laziness on my part - I dont really consider it a major flaw, although it is annoying.

I have set it .8 gamma, and use the huey screen calibrator...

I have a Studio 1737 and have exactly same issue here.  After played around with ATI Catalyst Control Center, I found out that this is definitely a hardware flaw.
On dell forum the page background is gradient, if your laptop has this issue you will notice there is a stripe area on the background flows.  Open Catalyst control Center,  don't maximize it so you can see the dell forum page behind.  In Graphics Settings, Color tab try to adjust brightness value. Watch the webpage background in the same time. You will see the "flowing" stripe moves. This means that the lcd monitor cannot handle a certain grayscale correctly. This also means that Dell uses flawy cheap monitors in high end products  and tries to fool their customers!
I got this pc before Christmas and I'm not happy with it at all. The first thing I noticed is that the sound ***, they provided an update for wireless network card driver  and solved the crackle and pop issue.  But software update cannot solve the bad quality speaker issue. The sound from built-in speaker still ***. And now is the disply problem. What will be the next?
Let's  see what you will get after the replacement.

when I first got the laptop, there were crackle sounds. I have been struggling with that for a few days and finally located a "solution". It may help if you are expereincing that. It was said to be the wireless card problem. Just disable band a in wireless card setting. Go to Manage network connection -> wireless connection -> properties -> Configurate -> Advanced -> disable band, select 802.11 a. It works for mine, should work for ppl having the same problem.

They have my LCD replaced. However, it was not a solution but another story of problem! When the engineer came to replace the LCD, I noticed that the replacement was marked "Refurbished"! They use refurbished items to replace faulty parts. I understand that a refurbished part can work as good as new part but I was not feeling good when seeing this. I then checked very carefully after replacement. Not supprisingly, there was new problems. Colors look uncomfortable - blue too bright but red too dark. Noisy flow seems diappear but I then discovered something worse. On the left handside of the screen, I saw lines although the right hand side looked ok. It seems to me that the gaps between pixels on the left part are bigger than those on the right part. So the picture looks discontinuous. The display then looks cheap - I paid extra for the WUXGA. The overall color still looks cold - blue and grey biased. My top cover was broken when the enginnering tried to replace it -.- omg what can I say?

It took me quite a while to explain that again via online chat. They say they will collect it to the depot and return when finish. Will be a week time or more. Today the another engineer came, from Birmingham, a nice talky guy. He checked all the problem and ordered a new top cover and "new" LCD (I guess it will be refurbished again, but I do not mind if it works well). he said an engineer will come tomorrow to fix them. To me, it saves me a lot time to have him come and repair, which is good. I hope this time everything will be ok. If Dell do provide good enough product, then they will need good enough after sale service.

By the way, it was said Dell would use refurbished parts to repair if the system was bought more than 21 days ago. And I was showed the T&C that Dell can use such parts to repair -.- I do not think that make good sense but it is in the T&C. I thought my LCD came as faulty, but the online chat guy said it was the feature of the brand, it met the industry standard. Sounds funny, what is the industry standard? any idea?

"The speakers are extremely bad - I also find the touch pad goes a bit weird sometimes as well."

WOW! Looks like common problem now. I often use exteranl speakers so I did not notice the quality. However, when I first got the laptop, there were crackle sounds. I have been struggling with that for a few days and finally located a "solution". It may help if you are expereincing that. It was said to be the wireless card problem. Touch pad is sometimes unsensitive enough. I just cannot move the cursor sometimes. I though it was my illusion. But now it seems to be a comman problem.

Studio 1735 should be a high end product from dell cos my specs was sold 1xxx pounds. Problem like these are really disappointing.
