System doesn't recognize added RAM

I have an Inspiron 1545 which had 3GB of RAM when originally purchased.  I upgraded to 4GB of RAM but my system still shows only 3GB of RAM.  Can you tell me what I need to do to get the system to recognize the additional RAM.

There are two things to check:

First, the hardware:  Press F2 at powerup and enter system setup.  You should see 4G of RAM there.

If you do, the problem most likely is that you're running a 32-bit operating system (check your system properties in the Windows control panel to verify.  If you are, you'll need to replace the 32-bit OS with a 64-bit OS -- whether that's worth the cost/effort is open to question.

Actually, when I checked it shows I have a 64bit operating system.  Is it possible the 2GB RAM was actually only 1GB?

Could be -- or check to see that you didn't replace the existing 2G with another 2 and leave the 1G module in place.
