Touchpad Driver Won't Install

In Device Manager, my "mouse" (touchpad) appears as "Unknown Device ... Driver is not installed."

I downloaded the right driver, using my Service Tag as ID. The install errors out, saying, "... the driver installation file is missing a necessary entry ... perhaps it's written for Windows 95...." Of course I checked the readme and it says it's the XP version.

Please.. How can I get my touchpad back?

have you gone to add/remove and deleted any t/p dirver there?  If not try that.  Also delete the driver you down loaded and down load it again.  See if that works.

You could also remove the driver from device manager. and try a fresh d/l and install

Excellent advice, thank you. I hadn't known the driver would be in the add/remove list. I thought it was all done through Device Manager. Once I deleted Synaptics from add/remove, I rebooted and XP found the touchpad and installed the generic driver. Then I was able to reinstall Synaptics from the previously downloaded file. Thanks again!
