touchpad pointer crazy

My Inspiron 1100 touchpad pointer still acts crazy--I have (I think?) installed new pointer drivers from Dell. Any ideas? Is the touchpad wearing out?
Thanks.

    DocN,

The touchpad may be wearing out on your Inspiron 1100.  However, if you adjust the touch sensitivity of the touch pad and turn off "tap-to-click", you may discover that the real cause of your problem is your dangling thumbs.

I discovered that this may be do to the anti-virus scanning program I was using (this pointer problem stopped when I stopped the downloading of this anti-virus program) also, I was using two firewalls (zonealarm and MS) so I was told to delete the MS firewall and use only zonealarm which seemed to stop the erratic point action.
