touchpad problem

I want to disable the touchpad when I plug in a usb wireless mouse but am having problems. From what I've seen online there should be a checkbox in Control Panel -> Mouse -> Device Settings tab that says ''Disable Touchpad/Pointing Stick when a USB mouse is connected'. Mine doesn't have this and I went to device manager to see if I have the current synaptics driver and it says I do (just downloaded from Dell site).

Any ideas?

    Hi Sdguy123,

Welcome to the Community. Click on Start, Control Panel, Mouse, Dell Touchpad, Click on the touch pad icon, and then click on Device Select, there you will have an option to Disable Touchpad when a USB mouse is connected.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you

Royan, thanks for the reply. When I go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Mouse, I don't have a Dell Touchpad option under Mouse Properties.

My Synaptics driver is 15.0.0.1 from 12/23/2009. The Synaptics page has this listed as the most current version.

Would love to resolve this, not a big fan of this particular touchpad and turning it on and off manually is a hassle.

Royan, that's what I've been doing but it's a hassle to enable it every time I want to take the laptop out. I need the computer to auto-disable the touchpad when a mouse is plugged in to a usb port.

Any ideas on how I can get the Dell Touchpad option to show up in my control panel?

    Hi Sdguy123,

This will disable the touchpad completely, and you will need to go back and enable it again, when you do not have a mouse connected. I dont see that option on synaptics touchpad option, but we do have that option on the Alps touchpad.

    Thank you

    Hi Sdguy123,

Thank you for the prompt response. Try this please.

    To disable your Synaptics touchpad:
    1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mouse icon to open the Mouse Properties dialog box.
    2. Click on the Device Settings tab.
    3. Click the Disable button. Click OK in response to the system message that displays.
    Hope this helps.
