Boot your system in
Safe Mode, and enter your Display Properties. Change your Settings to a resolution of 800x600. Restart your computer.
If Windows XP boots normally, and the desktop appears, enter your Display Properties again, and try changing to your monitor's optimal resolution of 1024x768.
