Getting windows XP to recognize my E176FP

After several years of service I've had to do a re-install of windows on my Dell. Everything went fine, except that for some reason windows insists on using the default monitor settings. I cannot get it to recognize the monitor (an E176FP). I've tried rebooting, reconnecting the VGA cable, even moving the Graphics card to another slot and then rebooting. The one driver I could find on the dell website is the up to date version for the monitor, but since windows doesn't accept that is HAS that monitor, it also refuses to use that driver.

I normally wouldn't care, but at the maximum resolution the graphics become quite bad, which wasn't the case before the re-install, when the system knew it had that specific monitor.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

What Dell PC model? What operating system? What video card? Did the video card driver install correctly? Open the Device Manager to check it.
