I'm not sure I understand your problem exactly, but there is a question. In DDM, in the "Input manager" tab, you can assign hotkeys to quickly switch between USB and video ports - maybe this is what you're looking for?

I too have a similar complaint. I assign hotkeys for Ctrl Shift 1 and another for Ctrl Shift 2 or Alt Shift A or Alt Shift B regardless of what assigned keys. I can only switch to HDMI 2 but when I try to switch back to HDMI 1, it doesn’t work with the hot keys. I have a Dell XPS 8950 and I have an HP laptop are both connected to HDMI ports for video display. How do I get the hotkey to switch back to HDMI 1 after I go to HDMI 2? The hot key doesn’t work. I can try various different hot keys it doesn’t matter which hot key is used for the assignment of keys. I cannot switch back after I switch to one of the HDMI ports. What am I missing?

Sounds like the keyboard you are using isn't connected to the system DDM is running on.

Make sure DDM is running on *both* the XPS and the HP laptop, and assign the same hotkey to the DDM "Input switch shortcut key" on *both* machines, selecting HDMI1 <<>> HDMI2. Then: when the active display is the XPS use the XPS keyboard to hit the hotkey; when its the HP, use the HP keyboard to hit the hotkey.

I've understood that hot keys can be assigned and I've tried doing so, but I can't get it to work.

Please see below. The only way I'm able to switch screens is by opening DDM and manually clicking to the correct input (change active input). 

As seen I've tried assigning hotkeys, but whenever I click said hotkey, NOTHING happens.

What am I doing wrong?

I’d love to finally solve this problem. Should «one-click» change between computers as outlined in my previous post be possible? If yes, what am I doing wrong? If not, I’d love to get suggestions for a different solution. Right now, it’s just too slow and too many steps involved to efficiently switch screens/computers. An alternative I considered is simply using a remote control program to use the other machine from my main machine and then never have to actually switch inputs on my Dell screen.

I checked this on the U49, with HDMI1 connected to one PC and USB-C connected to another PC, and the "Input switch shortcut key" set to Ctrl+Alt+F1 per your screenshot. The single hotkey Ctrl+Alt+F1 works exactly as expected, switching the active video to USB-C when HDMI1 is active, and to HDMI1 when USB-C is active.

Two things to check: (a) in the screenshot, the <<>> switch is not visible, and should be HDMI1 <<>> USB-C; (b) it is possible CTRL+ALT+F1 is already assigned so try a different hotkey.
