well I'd like to know if it's possible to delete a single saveset from a tape.
To be more clear: I have defined a group with his clients. I have labelled the tapes to be used by that group. Sometime it happens that client's configurations change, so I change the saveset (for example) and make a backup to test the new configuration. The command line request (savegrp command) execute a backup of that single client belonging to the defined group. If needed, when the execution is terminated, can I delete the saveset from the tape to save space for next scheduled backup operation?
Just another question, about the savegrp command. I use it to estimate tapes needed for a backup process, for example when I configure a new client. The estimate process prompt any warning if encounter an open file or not? It seems to me that, this way, savegrp command checks only the size of the files to be backed up, so it won't prompt any warning, even if I define a verbose command.
it sounds wonderful, as infact, what I want and I'm thinking is just to delete that ssid and re-use the tape space overwriting the backup I've done to test the new configuration. Of course I'm talking of the last backup and no other backups are written to the tape afterwards. But ... Well, the question can be obvious, but ... Can you tell me which command (by command line or GUI, of course), to delete a ssid from the media db? I've go through the command reference and admin guide but I've been not able to find anything interesting about that ... :-/
About the second question ... yes, of course I'm talking of full backups and ... ok, it check size and not availability of the files.
It is possible to delete it from media db, but to delete it from tape in a way that you create reusable hole on that spot on volume is not (except when this savesets is not last saveset on the volume and volume is still appendable).
In your case, it sounds like this is last backup - no other backups have been written to tape afterwards. In that case answer is yes - deleting last ssid on that volume from media db deletes information about it's location so next time write will occur it will overwrite old spot. At least I believe so
As for estimate, this kind of approach will only work with full backups - with incremental and/or differential you can't really get estimate, can you? Anyway, preview should check size I guess that matches next savegrp run - not real availability of the file.
My understanding is that networker newer overwrites data on a tape until you relable it.. Or get a problem with scsi resets..
This bequase of, NetWorker looks for the "EOT" (Two EOF marks) revindes one EOF mark overwrites that block with data.
To show you I did a query on a tape. removed the last saveset on filemark 10 with nsrmm -d. started a backup. got filemark. 11-> did a scanner on filemark 10. -> got back the savesets..
