Tape Out to Networker

Hi,

Our client needs to perform tape out on from an Avamar backup environment to Networker server so that the tape can be shipped out manually to their DR site. Other than extra hard disk space on the networker server for staging purposes, what else do I need generally and specifically in terms of number and type of networker license? Any special license for networker needed to enable tape put from Avamar?

    I was not aware that Avamar supports tape out now. I do remember in 3.72 days the only tape out possible was with scripts obtained with support which included some really nasty steps in case you would really need to restore.

    When using NW with avamar, it is not data that NW is saving, but rather cache thus you can't clone or stage data (nor tape out). Did something changed in 4.x? Or did you plan to save on tape only hash cache?

    Just make sure of the following;

    1. The machine being used for the staging should be of the same os as the machine where the original backup was taken.
    2. The staging machine should be registered as a client on Networker.

    No other special licenses are required. I am presuming that you are doing tape out of plain files and not of databses of any sort.

    Environment is consisted of 22 servers, 14 windows, 6 Solaris, 1 Windows and 1 Netware Server.

    Networker server is running on windows platform and the tape library is attached to this server.

    a) How should i tape out from this sort of environment?
    b) Can i use networker server as the staging server as well?
    c) I need to backup database, what is the difference of backing up plain files and db file?

    Thanks

    In terms of restoration of plain files;

    1. You'd need one machine each of Solaris, windows and Netware to stage the backups. Basically, if your original snap up was from Solaris, it can only be restored to another Solaris machine.

    2. You can use the Networker server to stage for the Windows backups.

    Am not sure about the database part as I haven't really tried it. My guess is you would need to have the database software installed on the staging machine. You would additionally need to install and configure the Networker module for that database and have a license for the module. You'd probably need to bring up the database after restoration and recovery before you can back it up to Networker. Once again, I am not sure about this part. It's just a guess on my part.

    Avamar still does not support tape out per say. The deduped data cannot be backed up directly. What we are talking about is reconstructing the data to the pre-dedup status and backing it up to tape. Tape out is still not a feature of Avamar. What we are talking about is something of a workaround. It is similar to taking a traditional NW backup of the original server.

    Reconstructing is another thing - title and what polyfuze said later was still referring to tape out - I'm not sure (s)he understands what we know.

    I know earlier this year there was a plan to do that, but it was not high on list of priorities.

    Hi Guys,

    I'm fully aware that Avamar does not support tape out it's just a work around to tape out. I just wanted to know about the licensing of Networker and what do i need in order to achieve this.

    Let say if i have solaris and windows server, do i need two different staging server to tape out?

    What if i have database, do i need DB agent on the staging server in order to tape out?

    Can i reconstruct de-duped data from solaris to windows and tape out?

    I guess so. I haven't done this so I am not sure. I can't see any other way out anyways.

    Yes. When you bring back your database on some system/disk you will need to back it up online which means you need module. On the other hand, if you would do offline backup (flat file system) then no module would be required, but this assume you would have database down during backup (and later during restore if that would happen).
