I have a 6024 used as a router for 6 vlans. each vlan connects to a "core switch" consisting of a 5324. I've been trying to track down slow ping times to switches on one of my vlans. it seems as though my router is ARP'ing for hosts. If I tcpdump on this net for arp's and grab 1000 lines, my router has ARP'd for 379 of them. I'm about to make sure something physical has not changed and also run wireshare on a port monitor of the vlan in question. what am I missing here?
Please don't use the Ping or "ICMP" responses from a switch - as a guide to network performance. The SNMP/Management stack is not coded/constructed to give fast responses to pings...lower priority.
The main CPU task is given to forwarding ethernet packets port- port.......so use a ping through the switch from host A to Host B to check latency/delay etc...but not to management IP of switch.
