Hello everyone, I am looking for information on connecting 2 stacks (4 switches per stack) to each other by fiber. I am not sure if i use the fiber connections on the front of the switches or the modules on the back. The switches will be used for a surveillance system and all ports in the stacks will be in the same VLAN and POE enabled. Once the physical connections are made, i dont know if it needs any CLI configuration to make it work or is it automatic. I have looked thru a 800 page CLI guide and cant find anything. Thanks for the help
It all depends how fast you want the link to be. The fiber ports on the front will only link up at 1gig/s max. If you use an XFP module and optics in the back the link will be 10gig/s. I would go with the 10gig if you can afford the additional expense of the XFP optics. And if your network is just flat layer 2 then you shouldnt need any additional setup on the switches.
If you've got 8 switches, 48 ports in each, and a camera on each port pushing 100kbps, the total traffic is still only 38 mbps. You definitely could use 10gig cards to connect the stacks together; but if you just used SFPs and fiber, that should work too. You'd need to look at 10gig before you get to 2mbps on every port. If you have all the ports in the same vlan (e.g. unconfigured, vlan1), then simply connecting the switches together with fiber should bridge them all together into one vlan.
